New Polymer Solutions for Construction Products Provide Synergistic Benefits with Cellulose and Synthetic Polymers

As we’ve described in previous posts, Chemstar started out supplying starch based solutions for the oil and gas drilling industry. As we began to expand and diversify, we took a hard look at what other industries could benefit from our products.

We soon realized our starch-based polymers could be used as an additive to more cost-effectively enhance the performance of a variety of construction and building products. This includes limestone or gypsum-based applications such as joint compounds and wall and ceiling finishing textures. It also includes cementitious-based applications such as mortars, grouts and self-leveling concretes.

Our GlucoSol® and GlucoStar® solutions have many advantages over more expensive synthetic or cellulose polymers for these types of building materials. They can modify and improve the performance of these products with the following properties:

  • Anti-sag
  • Rheology modification
  • Thixotropy
  • Water retention so the product doesn’t dry as quickly after application, providing a longer working life
  • Improved hydration rate for easy, lump-free mixing
  • Enhanced working properties adding slick characteristics that make compounds easier to spread over a longer period of time
  • Improved adhesion

For example, we worked with a manufacturer of wall sprays to improve the mixing characteristics, spray pattern, coverage, and open time for their product while reducing the need for more expensive cellulose or synthetic polymers.

When we develop a new additive, we work closely with the manufacturer to assess its goals and determine what variables need to be accounted for. For instance, different regions require special considerations. A product that will be applied in the north may require anti-freezing properties, while a product in the southwest may need greater water retention so it doesn’t dry out as fast.

We thrive on partnering with manufacturers to overcome these types of challenges. If what we’ve described is the type of solution you’re looking for, give us a call at 612-722-0079. We’re easy to work with and have a staff of chemists who love getting their hands dirty to develop new formulations.
